Britain's Prince Harry and a group of his mates were in Cyprus recently on a week-long scuba diving course as part of his military training, sources on the island told AFP.

"He was here as part of his Sandhurst （Royal Military Academy） training and not on a holiday," one source said.

"All Sandhurst officer candidates have to take part in an adventurist training course, be it scuba diving,sailing or rock climbing. They are told to pick an activity within safe parameters," he added.

The son of Prince Charles and the late Princess Diana flew in from Heathrow under an assumed name on budget Cypriot airliner Helios on December 17.

"He slept most of the way," an unnamed passenger told the local Sunday Mail newspaper.

The prince, a keen scuba diver, is due to complete his training at Sandhurst next April.
