A Muslim court in Malaysia has ordered two men to be caned for drinking alcohol in public, perhaps the first time such a harsh sentence has been meted out in the moderate, mainly Muslim nation, a daily said.
馬來西亞的一個回教徒法庭下令對兩名公開飲酒的男子處以笞刑，這可能是這個溫和、以回教徒為主的國家首度作出如此嚴厲的判決，一份日報如此報導。
Two brothers, both factory workers, were caught drinking alcohol at a restaurant last year on the country's predominantly Muslim east coast and pleaded guilty, believing they would be let off with a fine, the New Straits Times reported.
這對都是工廠工人的兄弟，對於去年在以回教徒為主的馬國東海岸一家餐廳內被逮到喝酒一事，已經俯首認罪，並以為只要罰款就能了事，「新海峽時報」報導說。
"The imposition of the caning penalty caught everyone by surprise in court today...," the paper said, adding that the pair, aged 30 and 32, had also been fined 5,000 ringgit ($1,316) each -- a few months' salary for many poorly paid Malaysians.
「笞刑懲罰令今天法庭上所有人感到驚訝…」該報如此報導，並說這對分別三十歲與三十二歲的兄弟，還各自被罰款五千馬幣（一千三百一十六美元）─相當於許多薪資微薄的馬來西亞人幾個月的薪水。
