A cold front moving southward across Taiwan is expected to peak tomorrow and on Wednesday, bringing temperatures in areas north of Tainan down to as low as 7°C, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.

During the day yesterday, temperatures reached highs of 17°C to 18°C in the north, 20°C to 23°C in the east and 25°C to 26°C in the south, the CWA said.

However, it turned increasingly cold starting last night, when temperatures fell to 12°C to 14°C in northern, central and northeastern Taiwan, and to 16°C to 18°C in other areas, it said.

By tonight, a low temperature of about 10°C is expected in Taipei, meeting the official definition of a “cold surge,” the agency said.

The cold wave is expected to peak tomorrow and Wednesday, when temperatures are expected to drop to 7°C to 9°C in areas north of Tainan, and to 9°C to 12°C in Kaohsiung, Pingtung and Taitung in the south, it said.

On Thursday it is expected to get warmer, it added.

Meanwhile, there is a chance of snow from tonight into tomorrow in northern and northeastern Taiwan at elevations of at least 1,000m or 1,500m above sea level, it said.

Snow or rime ice might happen tomorrow at elevations above 2,500m in central and southern Taiwan, the CWA said.

Snow is less likely as drier conditions prevail on Wednesday, it added.
