MERS: Amid an outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je’s delegation is to carry face masks, hand sanitizers and thermometers

Chang Kai-chen （張凱貞） of Taiwan won the gold medal in the women’s tennis singles yesterday at the Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea, beating Luksika Kumkhum of Thailand in two straight sets 6-1, 6-2. Chang, ranked 201st in the world, trounced the 125th-ranked Kumkhum in less than an hour at the Yeomju Indoor Tennis Court.
Chang’s coach, Ho Kuo-lung （何國龍）, said he would give her a 100-point score for “suppressing her rival throughout the game, without relenting for a moment.”
Chang was a bit more reserved in rating her victory, attributing it in part to playing on an indoor court because of rain.
“The ball goes a bit slower indoors. I was not affected in any way, as there was no wind that could have worked in unexpected ways,” she said.
Chang, who was once among the world’s top 100 female players, experienced a wrist injury in October 2013 and did not resume playing until July last year.
“I am satisfied with my performance today, just a year after I took up the racket again,” she said, adding that she hopes to give even better performances in future professional games.
Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je （柯文哲） left for South Korea yesterday to receive the flag of the World University Games from the Gwangju organizers at the closing ceremony tomorrow, when he is to deliver a three-minute speech in English.
During his five-day visit, Ko and his entourage plan to stay overnight in the U-myeon public housing community in Seoul to observe its planning and interior design, Taipei City Government spokesman Sidney Lin （林鶴明） said.
They are also to meet the management of SM Entertainment Co, which is responsible for such popular South Korean groups as Girls’ Generation and Super Junior, to learn about the success of the South Korean entertainment company, Lin said.
Amid an outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome （MERS） in South Korea, the delegation is to carry face masks, hand sanitizers and ear thermometers, while physicians on the team will take precautions to ensure the health and safety of the delegation, Lin said.
In December 2011, Taipei won the right to host the Universiade, set for Aug. 19 through Aug. 30, 2017, an international sports tournament for university athletes organized by the International University Sports Federation.
The 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade is to have 14 compulsory events: athletics, basketball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, aquatics （swimming, open water）, water polo, diving, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and taekwondo.
The seven optional events chosen by the host city include archery, baseball, golf, weightlifting and wushu.
