The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced moves to cut the working day by two hours and bring an end to the traditional siesta, in an attempt to bring the country into line with its European counterparts.
西班牙總理拉霍伊宣布要減少工時2小時，還要終止傳統的午休制度，試圖讓國家與歐盟諸國一致。
Spaniards usually start work at 10am and then remain at their desks until 2pm when they depart for lunches that can last up to three hours, giving some the chance to slip home for a siesta. Once they return to their desks at 4pm or 5pm they may not leave for home until 8pm. Prime time television programs in Spain start at 10pm and go on until 2am.
西班牙人通常早上10點開工，然後待在辦公桌前直到下午2點，再離開座位去吃午餐，休息時間最長可達3小時，有些人還可趁機溜回家小憩一番。他們回到工作崗位已是下午4、5點，晚間8點後才會離開。西班牙的電視黃金時段從晚間10點開始，然後播到凌晨2點。
Despite working longer hours than their German counterparts, statistics from the OECD show Spanish workers’ productivity is much lower. Mr Rajoy said："I will find a consensus to make sure the working day ends at 6pm."
「經濟合作暨發展組織」統計顯示，西班牙雖然工時長於德國，但勞動生產力相對低落許多。拉霍伊表示：「我要尋求共識，確保工作日在下午6點結束。」
The long lunch breaks are a throwback to the time when Spain was predominantly an agricultural economy and working outdoors became unbearable in midday temperatures that hit 40C in summer. Today, Spain’s service-based economy does not have the same problem.
西班牙漫長的午休有史可考，在農業經濟為主的時代，中午在外工作令人難以忍受，因為夏天最熱可達攝氏40度。時至今日，西班牙已轉型為服務業經濟，不再有相同的問題。
