Rolf Babiel, a German-born midtown pushcart salesman, has won the first "Vendy" award given by the Street Vendor Project.
Judges voted on several criteria, including food portability and vendor personality, before naming the winner.
Babiel, 53, whoes menu includes bratwurst, is in the restaurent business but still makes time to sell from his cart, called "Hallo Berlin," on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 54th Street. He's been selling in the street for more than 20 years.
"I want to thank New York, coming here from Germany and letting me sell my German soul food," he said. "New York is the greatest city on earth."
About 200 vendors had been nominated for the award, which was given out in a garage on East 4th Street where pushcarts are stored. The Street Vendor Project aims to raise awareness of challenges facing the city's estimated 10,000 food and merchandise vendors.
這個字是英文的外來語,原本是德文bratwurst,由braten(煎,炸,烘烤)和wurst(香腸)組合而成。
pushcart:手推車,由push(推)和cart(送貨馬車)組合而成。
