Fishermen in Zanzibar have caught a coelacanth, an ancient fish once thought to have become extinct when it disappeared from fossil records 80 million years ago, an official said.
一名官員指出，桑吉巴的漁夫捕獲一隻腔棘魚，這種遠古時代的魚，在留下8000萬年前的化石後，便消失無蹤，因而一度被認定已滅絕。
Researcher Nariman Jidawi of Zanzibar’s Institute of Marine Science said the fish was caught off the tropical island’s northern tip.
桑吉巴海洋科學研究所的研究員吉達威指出，該魚在這座熱帶島嶼的北端被捕。
"The fishermen informed us they had caught this strange fish and we quickly rushed to find it was a coelacanth," he said, adding that it weighed 27 kg and was 1.34 meters long.
「漁夫通知我們捕到這隻怪魚，我們快速趕抵，發現是隻腔棘魚，」他說，並指出該魚重27公斤，體長1.34米。
The coelacanth, known from fossil records dating back more than 360 million years, was believed to have become extinct some 80 million years ago until one was caught off the eastern coast of South Africa in 1938.
從距今逾3億6000萬年前的化石而為人所知的腔棘魚，1938年在南非東海岸捕撈到一隻腔棘魚之前，一直被認為已在8000萬年前滅絕。
None has since been caught in South African waters, but around 30 have been caught in recent years off Tanzania, possibly because diminishing shallow-water resources have forced fishermen to cast their nets in the deeper waters where coelacanths live.
此後，南非水域再也沒有捕過腔棘魚，然而近年在坦尚尼亞海域捕獲約30隻，可能是因為淺海資源消失，迫使漁夫將網撒向較深的水域所致，因為腔棘魚生存於較深的水域。
