Electronic immigration gates at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport are being upgraded, with work expected to finish before the Lunar New Year, the National Immigration Agency said yesterday.
The agency introduced the e-Gate system in 2012 to automate the immigration process at airports and other ports of entry.
The facilities have undergone three iterations in the decade since they were introduced, the agency said in a news release, adding that another generation is necessary to update the aging equipment.
From now until 2025, the agency said it is to gradually phase out the first-generation machines and update to the fourth generation.
The current third iteration of the e-Gate provides simultaneous registration and clearance in multiple languages, using biometric recognition without height restrictions, the agency said.
The newest version is to bring about a faster biometric identification system with a clearer graphical interface, helping improve the recognition rate to speed up the process, it said.
Work began last month to update the e-Gates in Terminals 1 and 2 at Taipei Taoyuan International Airport, it said, adding that work is expected to be completed by the end of next month, in time for increased traffic around the Lunar New Year holiday.
As some of the gates would not be in operation during this time, more manual counters would be open and staff are to help direct traffic, it added.
