SETTING A TREND: Taiwan have won the most BFA U15 championships of any country, but their victory over Japan was not certain after a Super Round defeat

Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwan on Saturday defeated Japan 6-4 in Weihai, China, to win their seventh Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA) U15 Baseball Championship title.

With the score tied 1-1 through the first four innings, Taiwan shattered the stalemate in the top of the fifth inning, racking up four runs to take a comfortable 5-1 lead.

After Yen Po-hsun (顏鉑勛) put himself on second base with a grounder, a Sung Mi-chia (宋米家) hit to right field sent Yen home for the first score of Taiwan’s run streak.

Hsing Shih-hsien (幸世賢) provided the second fifth-inning run, while Taiwan earned the last two by taking advantage of a number of good hits and capitalizing on Japan’s errors.

Japan narrowed the gap to 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning, with a combination of batting and base stealing.

After an uneventful sixth inning, Hsing scored Taiwan’s final run of the game in the top of the seventh. After stealing second base, Hsing crossed home plate off a hit by Chen Chin-feng (陳金豐).

Although Japan bagged one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning, Taiwan reliever Tu I-tse (杜翊澤) kept their opponents at bay to close out the game 6-4.

The victory settled a score with Japan after Taiwan lost 5-6 to their rivals in the Super Round on day five of the tournament.

Also known as the Asian AA Baseball Championship, the biennial BFA U15 Baseball Championship ran from Aug. 20 to Saturday, with eight countries participating.

Taiwan have won the championship more than any other country, with a total of seven tournament titles, including this year’s, which was Taiwan’s first since 2015.
