The National Defense University’s president traveled to the Czech Republic in February to formalize a partnership with the university’s counterpart in the Central European country, which could include joint research and regional security evaluations, the National Defense University said in a statement on Friday.

The university in February received an invitation from the Czech University of Defence (UO) to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish an academic partnership, it said.

The Taiwanese university’s president and former navy commander admiral Liu Chih-pin (劉志斌) visited UO at the beginning of February to sign the MOU, it said.

The Czech university’s representative at the signing ceremony on Feb. 16 was vice-rector for external relations and internationalization Libor Kutej, a former Czech Military Intelligence deputy head, UO’s Web site said.

Kutej and the Czech university’s head, rector-commandant Zuzana Krocova, visited the National Defense University last month, when they traveled to Taiwan as part of a delegation led by Czech Chamber of Deputies Speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova.

During the visit, Kutej gave a lecture to high-ranking Taiwanese military officers on China’s campaign for influence in the Czech Republic over the past 10 years, UO said.

The National Defense University said it would organize international academic symposiums and seminars with UO to boost knowledge and awareness of the international situation and regional security among its students and faculties.
