The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday panned President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) presidential candidate Eric Chu (朱立倫) for their criticisms of DPP presidential candidate Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) over the past few days.

In an interview with the online news outlet Ettoday published yesterday, Ma said that it was comforting to know that Tsai sang the national anthem, and he claimed that is not telling the whole truth about her cross-strait policies, adding that Tsai did not even come clean about about her visit to Japan — possibly alluding to media reports saying that Tsai had a secret meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Since becoming the KMT’s presidential candidate, Chu has said that the Republic of China (ROC) would be destroyed if the DPP wins both the presidency and a majority in the legislature.

“Ma is the head of the state, while Chu is both the chairman and the presidential candidate of the governing party, it is really saddening to see that neither of them are able to point to their track records to endorse their own abilities to govern, nor are they able to come up with new policies that would benefit the nation,” DPP spokesperson Juan Chao-hsiung (阮昭雄) said.

“The only thing they are capable of doing is threatening the public the nation would perish if they vote for the opposition and checking on how people sing the national anthem, or putting how people’s vacations under the magnifying glass,” he said.

“This kind of finger-pointing will only strengthen the belief that the current political chaos can only be ended by a change in administration,” Juan said. “With this kind of attitude on display, it is not surprising that Ma and Chu have not won the public’s support.”
