As biodiesel plants sprout up all over Europe to produce cleaner transport fuel in a bid to curb climate change, the industry is wondering what to do with growing quantities of a glutinous by-product -- glycerine.
生質柴油廠如雨後春筍般的出現在歐洲大陸各地，以生產乾淨運輸燃料，減緩氣候變遷，但業者也開始傷腦筋，到底該如何處理越來越多的黏黏副產品─「甘油」。
Glycerine is what is left from refining oilseeds to make biodiesel, a fuel alternative European governments have embraced as part of their efforts to reduce carbon emissions, both because it burns more cleanly and because the plants it is made from offset the CO2 that comes out of the exhaust pipe.
甘油是提煉油籽以生產生質柴油過程中所留下的產物。歐洲國家政府選擇「生質柴油」作為降低碳排放量的替代能源，是因為生質柴油燃燒時比較乾淨，也因為原料植物可以抵銷排氣管排放出來的二氧化碳。
World supplies of the slippery, sweet goo coming from the biodiesel industry are likely to triple between 2006 and 2010.
全球生質柴油業生產的滑滑、甜甜的膠狀物（指甘油），產量在2006到2010年間可能增為3倍。
By then there will be 2.5 million tonnes of the stuff squelching around world markets, around 1.6 million tonnes of that from biodiesel plants, Spanish energy group Acciona estimates.
到時候，全球市場將充斥著250萬噸甘油，其中160萬噸來自生質柴油業，據西班牙能源業者Acciona估計。
For every 10 tonnes of biodiesel, producers are left with about one tonne of glycerine.
業者每生產10噸生質柴油，就會產出約1噸甘油。
