A biography of Lin Rong San (林榮三), the late founder of the Taipei Times and its sister newspaper, the Chinese-language Liberty Times, has been published, serving as a reminder of his love for Taiwan and his hope that Taiwanese would cherish this love from “generation to generation.”

Titled Lin Rong San and Taiwan (林榮三與台灣), the book was edited and published by the Lin Rong San Foundation of Culture and Social Welfare to mark the 10th anniversary of his passing.

Drawing on extensive interviews with Lin and accompanied by 148 rare photographs, the book traces his life from his birth in today’s New Taipei City’s Lujhou District (蘆洲), his family background and upbringing, and his education. It moves on to describe the transformations in different stages of his life and his influence on Taiwan.

Lin, the founder of the Liberty Times Group, the Union Group and the foundation, had served as a legislator, member of the Control Yuan, national policy adviser to the president and senior adviser to the president.

In 2000, he was awarded the Order of Brilliant Star with Grand Cordon by then-president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝) and in 2008, he was awarded the Order of Propitious Clouds with Grand Cordon by then-president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) in recognition of his contributions

According to the foundation, as Lin in 2015 lay on his deathbed, he reminded his children: “Do not let Taiwan be deceived.”

For this reason, the publication of the book “is driven above all by the hope that in these turbulent times we may once again rediscover strength and honor, reaffirm conviction and conscience, and allow this cherished love for Taiwan to become a treasure passed down from generation to generation,” the foundation said.

The foundation is accepting public requests for free copies of the book.
