The Taiwan High Court’s Kaohsiung branch office yesterday granted a request by the Kaohsiung branch of the High Prosecutors’ Office to detain a Taiwanese businessman surnamed Wen （溫）, and two retired military officers, surnamed Chiang （江） and Chu （朱）, for allegedly developing a network for China in Taiwan.
The prosecutors’ office also requested that the court deny visitation rights for the alleged offenders, which was also approved.
The trio were charged with contraventions of the National Security Act （國家安全法）.
The prosecutors’ office said that sometime between 2016 and 2019, Wen, who lives in Kaohsiung, was allegedly recruited by China’s intelligence units when doing business in China and instructed to post commentary encouraging Taiwanese farmers to seek opportunities in China.
Wen was also allegedly instructed to recruit retired or currently serving military personnel, the prosecutors said.
Wen was introduced to Chu through a friend and later met Chiang through Chu, the prosecutors said, adding that after meeting with Chinese intelligence officers, the two had allegedly agreed to help develop espionage cells.
Wen, Chu and Chiang all deny the allegations.
