Taiwan’s “Queen of Judo” Lien Chen-ling （連珍羚） yesterday defeated Momo Tamaoki of Japan in the women’s under-57kg final to take a surprise gold in the weight class and Taiwan’s second judo gold at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Lien’s gold medal was also Taiwan’s second-ever in the sport at the quadrennial competition, coming one day after Yang Yung-wei’s （楊勇緯） triumph in the men’s under-60kg weight class final.
Lien was competing in an Asian Games for the fourth time, with her best previous showings bronze medals in 2010 in Guangzhou, China, and in 2018 in Jakarta.
Lien, 35, yesterday after winning the gold said that Yang was one of the motivations that helped her stick with it to the end.
While Taiwan’s Liao Yu-jung （廖宇蓉） failed in her bid to claim a bronze medal in the women’s judo under-70kg category, Taiwan later yesterday won a bronze medal in the men’s team table tennis.
