National Central University (NCU) on Tuesday said it is integrating ChatGPT into certain classes for the upcoming academic year, with the aim of familiarizing students with using new technologies.

The generative artificial intelligence (AI) tool is to be used in freshman English classes, as well as calculus and other general courses related to technology and AI, the Taoyuan-based university said in a news release.

Students would also not be restricted from using ChatGPT, Copilot and other AI tools in their schoolwork, it said, adding that teaching methods would be designed to make use of these new learning tools.

Hopefully, the technology could offer different learning experiences to students to enhance their creativity and critical thinking skills, it said.

In a survey about AI sent to teachers earlier this year, the university found that 42 percent are open to the idea of students using ChatGPT in their schoolwork.

Many teachers believe that ChatGPT would help students interpret information and learn on their own, the school said.

However, there is also concern that students would be unable to determine fact from fiction or become too dependent on the technology, losing their willingness to study and ability to think independently, it added.

Addressing plagiarism and ethics concerns, Office of Academic Affairs associate dean Wang Li-jung (王俐容) said that the school would continue to promote the use of citations and disclosure of AI use in academic papers and computer code.

It would also help teachers check students’ use of AI, encourage verbal explanations as a grading method and guide students to adopt an appropriate approach to AI use, she added.
