A group of Taiwanese artists led by Chung Po-yuan (鍾伯淵) is showcasing Taiwan’s cultural diversity in a theater design show in Prague with technology-fused exhibits and performances with the theme “The Rare Ship, Taiwan.”

The Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ23), which has been held every four years in the Czech capital since 1967, is one of the world’s leading exhibitions for theater and performance design.

The show, initiated and funded by the Czech Ministry of Culture, and organized by the Czech Arts and Theatre Institute, is in its 15th edition this year.

It opened on Thursday last week and is to finish on Sunday.

“The Rare Ship, Taiwan” was organized by the Taiwan Association of Theatre Technology, which invited Chung, the artistic director of Shinehouse Theatre, to curate the PQ Taiwan Exhibition, information on the PQ23’s Web site showed.

The performances include The Whisper of the Waves by Shinehouse Theatre, which delves into the topics of environmental change, solitude, surrogacy for same-sex partners and emotions in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, the association said in a statement on Tuesday.

A performance titled To the Warriors is based on an essay by Taiwanese novelist Huang Chun-ming (黃春明), the statement said.

Written through the lens of the generational life stories of indigenous people, the work showcases their identity, it added.

The two performances use voiceprint technology to display interactions between the stage and the actors, it said.

In addition to the performances, the Taiwanese exhibition displays images of Taiwan and its technology, tides and forests through lights and screens, association president Lin Pu (林璞) said.

The display features works by Taiwanese designers, depicting the “Ship of Man,” “Ship of Diversity” and “Ship of Technology” to highlight Taiwan’s role in the world of theater design, the PQ23 organizers said.
