Taiwanese boxers won five golds, a silver and a bronze at the World Boxing Tour Golden Belt Series in Guadalajara, Mexico.
On Saturday, 2020 Olympic bronze medalist Huang Hsiao-wen beat Haiti’s Kathreen Sterling in a 5-0 decision to win a gold medal in the women’s flyweight (50-52kg) category at the International Boxing Association’s inaugural World Boxing Tour, which began with a Silver Belt Series in Slovenia in October.
Kan Chia-wei also won a gold medal on Saturday, beating Trinidad and Tobago’s Aaron Prince in a 3-2 decision in the men’s middleweight (71-75kg) category, while Huang Yu-ting won silver in the women’s light welterweight (60-63kg) category.
On Friday, Chen Nien-chin won her third gold medal of the year, beating Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the women’s light middleweight (66-70kg) final, securing a 4-1 decision.
Chen, 25, won gold medals at the Thailand Open in April and the Asian Boxing Confederation Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Jordan last month.
She was also honored on Friday with the best sports spirit award at the Sports Elite Awards organized by Taiwan’s Sports Administration in Taipei.
The two-time Olympian was recognized for competing in last year’s Tokyo Olympics, even though she had undergone chemotherapy for Hodgkin’s lymphoma. She was diagnosed with the disease in November 2019, and has been in remission since late 2020. She publicly discussed her fight against the disease in October last year.
On Thursday, Lin Yu-ting beat Jennifer Yazmin Carrillo of Mexico 5-0 in the final of the women’s featherweight (54-57kg) category to secure gold, and Wu Shih-yi beat Algeria’s Hadjila Khelif 5-0 in the women’s lightweight (57-60kg) final.
Lin was named the year’s best female athlete at the Sports Elite Awards.
Also in Mexico, 2016 Olympic bronze medalist Lai Chu-en won a bronze medal in the men’s light welterweight category (60-63.5kg).
