Oils produced by Namchow Group (南僑集團), one of the nation’s largest food manufacturers, have passed safety inspections and the company has been given permission to resume selling them, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced yesterday.
After undergoing quality control examinations, 123 of Namchow’s beef tallow, coconut oil and palm oil products were all confirmed as complying with government standards, acting FDA Director-General Chiang Yu-mei (姜郁美) said.
The Taoyuan County Government’s Public Health Bureau said the administration notified it of the inspection results yesterday and the bureau then allowed Namchow to resume sales of its food items that had been removed from store shelves as a precautionary measure amid the ongoing tainted oil scandal.
The bureau added that it has also removed the seals on oil sumps at Namchow’s factory in Taoyuan.
The administration’s product testing has confirmed that Namchow’s oil products contain no harmful antioxidants or contaminants, such as heavy metals and aflatoxins, Chiang said.
The company imported five shipments of beef tallow from Australia between 2012 and August, during which time it also imported 22 shipments of coconut oil and three shipments of palm oil from the Philippines, according to the administration.
Health officials said Namchow did not declare the imports as being for use in food products, in an apparent bid to evade customs inspections of food-related items.
Nanchow was fined a total of NT$30 million (US$986,160) on Thursday for making false customs declarations.
