Afghanistan is set to receive its first home-grown Sesame Street Muppet - a six-year-old female character named Zari who will empower young girls.

In a country where women were until recently almost completely excluded from schooling, Zari will target young girls and entrenched traditional attitudes towards women’s education and careers.

Zari will be the country’s first locally produced character, and will appear on the Afghan version of the U.S. show alongside regular favourites such as Elmo, Oscar the Grouch and Big Bird.

However, with the show being the most watched children’s programme in the country, she has a vital role to play.

Zari will be featured in segments about health, exercise and well-being, and will interview a doctor and other professionals to find out what she would need to do to become one herself.

Research has shown that previous seasons of the show have begun to open the minds of Afghan fathers about the value of educating their daughters.
