In the birthplace of the printing press, public bookshelves are popping up across the nation on street corners, city squares and suburban supermarkets.
在印刷機的誕生地德國，公共書架正如雨後春筍般在全國各地的街角、都市廣場及郊區超市附近冒出頭來。
In these free-for-all libraries, people can grab whatever they want to read, and leave behind anything they want for others. There’s no need to register, no due date, and you can take or give as many as you want.
在這些完全免費的圖書館裡，民眾可以拿走任何想讀的書，並留下任何想讓別人看的書。不需要註冊、沒有還書日期，你想拿走或留下多少書都可以。
“This project is aimed at everyone who likes to read --- without regard to age or education. It is open for everybody,” said Michael Aubermann, one of the organizers of the free book exchange in the city of Cologne.
「這項計畫是針對所有喜歡閱讀的人—不分年紀或教育程度，對所有人開放」，科隆市免費書籍交換計畫主辦人之一奧伯曼說。
The public book shelves, which are usually financed by donations and cared for by local volunteer groups, have popped up independently of each other in many cities across Germany including Berlin, Hannover and Bonn, and also in suburbs and villages. Even commercial book stores and online book retailers seem to support the idea of free book exchanges.
這些公共書架通常是透過捐款方式贊助，並由地方志工團體負責照顧，目前已分別在柏林、漢諾瓦與波昂等德國許多城市出現，在各地郊區與村鎮也看得到。就連商業書店與網路書籍零售商，似乎也支持免費換書的概念。
Each shelf holds around 200 books and it takes about six weeks for a complete turnover, with all the old titles replaced by new ones, he said.
每座書架可容納約200本書，書籍完全流通過一輪大約要6週時間，屆時所有的舊書都會被新書取代，他說。

pop up：片語，指突然出現，如He suddenly popped up out of nowhere.（突然間他不知打哪兒冒出來。）
free-for-all：名詞，原指可自由參加的比賽，引申指參加者為所欲為或大聲爭執的失控場面，如The row between the Prime Minister and the opposition leader soon developed into a free-for-all between MPs from all parties.（首相與反對黨領袖間的爭執，很快演變為所有政黨國會議員之間的大混戰。）但本文中則指對所有人都免費。
turnover：名詞，原指翻倒、翻轉，引申為指（貨物等的）流通或人員替換率，如We want to find ways to speed up inventory turnover.（我們希望想辦法加快存貨的周轉率。）
