Taiwanese canoeist Tsai Shu-han on Sunday made history by winning Taiwan’s first gold medal at the Asian Canoe Sprint Junior and U23 Championships in Pattaya, Thailand.

The competition at the Royal Thai Navy Rowing and Canoeing Training Center ran from Wednesday though Sunday.

She competed in the junior women’s C1 200m event, defeating opponents from countries including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and South Korea.

Tsai, who won three golds at Taiwan’s National Middle School Athletic Games in April, is enrolled at the National Shui-Li Vocational High School of Commerce and Industry in Nantou County. She began kayaking in the eighth grade and later switched to canoeing.

She attributed her success to her family’s support.

On Saturday, 16-year-old kayaker Hsieh Chia-cheng took home a silver medal competing above his age group in the U23 men’s K1 1,000m.

Huang Chun-chieh and Lin Han-you won bronze in the junior men’s K2 500m, while Tseng Li-tsen also won bronze in the junior women’s K1 500m.
