One person died after a tour bus overturned yesterday afternoon on the access road to Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area in Yilan County, local authorities said.

Yilan County emergency services said the tour bus carrying 42 people overturned while descending the mountain at about 3pm near the 5.3km marker.

Thirty-nine people were taken to hospital. Seven were seriously injured, five were moderately injured and 26 had minor injuries. One woman, who was around 70 years old, was found at the scene without vital signs and was pronounced dead at the hospital at about 6pm.

Local media reported that the bus’ brakes might have failed, causing it to slam into a cliff along the roadside before overturning near Jiuzhize Hot Springs.

In other news, a three-year-old boy died on Saturday after a scooter driven by his mother hit the back of a car parked on the side of County Highway No. 165 in Chiayi, local authorities said.

The Chiayi County Fire Bureau yesterday said it had received a report at 3:36pm on Saturday that two people were injured in an accident in Shuishang Township (水上).

After arriving at the scene, emergency workers found the boy experiencing from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, the bureau said in a news release.

His 22-year-old mother had cuts and scrapes but remained conscious, it added.

The mother and her son were sent to Chaiyi’s St Martin De Porres Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead, the bureau said.

The incident was believed to have been caused by the mother, who hit a sedan parked on the shoulder of the road, police said.

The exact circumstances of the crash are still being investigated, they added.
