Japan became Taiwan’s second-largest fruit and vegetable export market last year after the US, topping China, the Council of Agriculture said in a statement on Monday.
Last year, Taiwan sold agricultural products to non-Chinese markets worth a record NT$135.4 billion (US$4.25 billion), up 6.3 percent over 2021, the council said.
Taiwanese agricultural exports to Japan totaled NT$25.4 billion last year, a 17.5 percent increase year-on-year, it said.
Exports of pineapples to Japan in particular soared to 17,850 tonnes in 2021 and 17,500 tonnes last year from 2,160 tonnes in 2020, council data showed.
The data came as Taiwan sent a national delegation to participate in this year’s Foodex Japan trade show, which started yesterday and runs through Friday at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center.
Organized by the council, the Bureau of Foreign Trade and the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, 151 Taiwanese businesses are displaying their products at a national pavilion during the annual fair.
Officials from Kaohsiung, Tainan and Taoyuan, and Chiayi, Changhwa, Hualien, Pingtung and Taitung counties also attended the show to promote their agricultural and food products.
The council said that jujubes, mullet roe, pineapples, grouper, processed pork products and tea are the primary items promoted at the Taiwan pavilion.
