Taiwanese paddlers Cheng I-ching and Li Yu-jhun on Sunday won the women’s doubles title at the WTT Contender Amman, rallying to beat Prithika Pavade and Camille Lutz of France.
Cheng and Li won 7-11, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10, 11-3 in a 35-minute best-of-five match at the Sport Palace Hall in the Jordanian capital.
The Taiwanese pair started off shaky, losing two of the first three games, as they struggled to adapt to Pavade and Lutz’s aggressive style.
Facing elimination in the fourth game, Cheng and Li rallied, bouncing back from a 5-9 deficit with three consecutive points. After they saved match point, they went on a four-point run to win the game 12-10.
Building on their momentum, the Taiwanese duo raced to a 9-1 lead in the fifth game, before winning 11-3.
It was Cheng’s first tournament win in a women’s doubles event since the Swedish Open in 2016. From 2019 to 2021, she was focused on playing mixed doubles in preparation for the Tokyo Olympics.
It was also a return to form after a series of poor outings in the second half of last year.
“I feel like I’m slowly getting it back and moving in the right direction,” she said after the match, adding that she felt “validated” and “very happy” with her and Li’s first place finish.
