This year’s National Fried Chicken Carnival is to be held at Kaohsiung’s FE21 Department Store next weekend, with popular chain outlets from across Taiwan and from overseas competing for the title of “best fried chicken” in the nation.
Among the leading vendors participating in the carnival are local fried chicken chain Casker and South Korea’s No. 1 fried chicken brand, Nene Chicken.
Some participants are to offer “sweet” fried chicken to give visitors a new take on the food, said the Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau, which is organizing the event.
The bureau has also invited vegetarian stalls to offer fried king oyster mushrooms, French fries, fried tofu and other non-meat products.
Nene Chicken’s representative said it has more than 1,800 stores in South Korea, which sell about 60,000 pieces of fried chicken a day.
The chain, which has branches worldwide, opened in Taiwan in 2018 and has more than 40 outlets, the representative said.
Nene’s products are fried on the spot when orders are made using only the freshest palm oil, the representative said, adding that its unique sauce is flown in from South Korea.
Casker’s representative, surnamed Hung (洪), said the company would bring its signature popcorn chicken to the competition, adding that its secret marinade recipe allows its products to retain the original sweet flavor of the meat.
