《TAIPEI TIMES 焦點》Export orders could rise more than 5%: MOEA

2014/07/21 03:00

Staff writer, with CNA

With global demand on the rise on the back of an economic recovery, Taiwan’s export orders for last month are expected to continue to rise, growing more than 5 percent from a year earlier, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said on Saturday.

The ongoing uptrend in the global export market could make last month the fifth consecutive month in which the nation has registered year-on-year growth in export orders, the ministry said.

The ministry is scheduled to release its export order data for last month today.

In May, Taiwan’s export orders rose 4.7 percent from a year earlier to total US$38.02 billion, largely in reflection of solid demand for mobile devices worldwide.

The ministry said that as strong demand for handheld devices continues and the global PC market improves due to replacement demand resulting from the end of Microsoft’s support for the Windows XP operating system, Taiwan’s high-tech product exporters are expected to report growing order data for last month.

In May, export orders placed on Taiwan’s electronics and information devices rose 12.6 percent and 2.7 percent respectively, from a year earlier, the ministry said.

The ministry said that the nation’s flat-panel makers were expected to enjoy an increase in export orders last month as global demand for PCs and ultra-high definition TVs grows.

However, Taiwanese flat-screen suppliers still face stiff competition from China and South Korea, the ministry said. It added that display manufacturers in China have been accelerating their efforts to increase their production capacity, while their South Korean counterparts have been cutting product prices.

The ministry said Taiwanese petrochemical and base metal makers should remain alert over a supply glut in China.
