A migrant caregiver has won NT$2 million (US$65,859) and a luxury vehicle in the “NT$20 million Super Red Envelope” scratch card lottery, Taiwan Lottery Co said yesterday.

The woman bought the winning ticket at a lottery store in Hsinchu County’s Jhudong Township (竹東).

She said that when she entered the store, the vendor had their smartphone lying face down on the glass counter where lottery tickets were on display.

As she was browsing lottery tickets, the phone lit up with a text message, shining its light on the scratch card below, which she bought, she said.

Taiwan Lottery said the woman won a cash prize of NT$2 million and a Mercedes-Benz GLA180 sports utility vehicle (SUV), estimated to be worth NT$2.86 million.

To celebrate the Year of the Rabbit, Taiwan Lottery has unveiled several new lottery scratch cards, including the “NT$20 million Super Red Envelope,” which is sold for NT$2,000.

The scratch card lottery offers seven top prizes of NT$20 million each and 10 second prizes and 850 third prizes of NT$1 million each, with total prize money of NT$12.7 billion, the company said.

As of press time last night, one of the seven top prizes had been claimed by a person in Yilan City, Taiwan Lottery said.

A man in his 50s won NT$1 million from a scratch card he had bought in a lottery store in Taipei’s Nangang District (南港), it said.

The store owner said the man was a frequent customer.

Before buying the winning scratch card, he played with the store owner’s cat for good luck, as the animal has long been perceived by customers to bring fortune.

Another person in Taoyuan also claimed NT$1 million, Taiwan Lottery said.

The man, accompanied by his family, walked into a lottery store in Jhongli District (中壢), and chose a scratch card with a serial number containing the number “17” after he saw a photocopy of a winning NT$20 million Super Red Envelope card with the same serial number hanging on the store’s wall, Taiwan Lottery said.

The man, who is in his 40s, said he would use the prize money for his children’s education.
