《TAIPEI TIMES 焦點》 Facebook photo page draws police attention, criticism

Taipei police yesterday vowed to track down an online club known as pai she (拍社) whose members are taking indecent pictures of women in public places and posting the photographs on a Facebook page.

The group set up a members-only page that contains about 1,800 photographs, the Chinese-language Apple Daily News reported yesterday.

The photos appear to have been taken without their subjects’ knowledge, focused on women’s breasts, thighs and buttocks.

Many of the pictures showed young women in mini-skirts and short shorts walking, sitting or in public places. Although some photographs were taken in bookstores or shopping malls, a significant number were taken on the Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system, so officials suspect most of the members are in the metropolitan Taipei area.

Taipei City Police Department chief Huang Sheng-jung (黃昇勇) promised to crack down on the group. He said the department’s Criminal Investigation Division has been ordered to work with the MRT police units to catch people taking covert photographs, and ordered stepped-up patrols on MRT trains and around MRT stations.

Only males are allowed to join pai she and the group has reportedly signed up about 25,000 members, the newspaper said.

Club operators said they are simply sharing photographs of beautiful female bodies.

However, Garden of Hope Foundation (勵馨基金會) official Hung Ya-li (洪雅莉) denounced the group, saying it was objectifying women and not respecting women’s right to privacy.
