The armed forces are to conduct computer-assisted war games from today until Friday, military officials said, adding that this year’s annual Han Kuang military exercises are to focus on emergency response.
To test the armed forces’ combat readiness in the face of a military threat from China, the drill is to focus on rapid battle preparation for troops and the mobilization of supplies and reservists.
The five-day drill is the first phase of the 31st Han Kuang military exercises, which are designed to test the military’s combat capabilities after it completed a streamlining plan late last year, Ministry of National Defense Joint Operation Division Director Major General Zhong Shu-ming （鍾樹明） said.
The exercise is to simulate electronic warfare, cyberattacks, defense and aiding outlying counties, among other objectives.
Following this month’s drill, the military is to stage exercises using actual personnel from early September, which are to include live-fire exercises.
The second stage of the annual exercises is to test various weapons systems recently acquired from the US or ones developed locally.
The new systems to be deployed in the September drills include AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and P-3C marine patrol aircraft from the US, as well as the indigenous Tuo Chiang stealth missile corvette and the Pan Shi supply vessel.
