The recent arrest in Germany of an Israeli national with links to an illegal international kidney trading syndicate uncovered in South Africa, has been seen as a major development in the case, it was reported.

Businessman Ilan Perry is alleged to have headed a syndicate suspected in at least 100 illegal kidney transplants at a hospital in the city of Durban in which donors were recruited from Brazil, Romania and Israel and paid 5,000 to 20,000 dollars per kidney.

Perry, according to the Johannesburg-based Sunday Times newspaper, faces extradition.His arrest is set to reopen the case against doctors and medical staff at the St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban, earlier charged with 109 counts of fraud and 109 counts of assault under South African laws against trade in human organs.

Charges against the hospital personnel, among them senior surgeons, were dropped by a Durban court last week because of the non-availability of one of the accused, a police spokesman said. But, he noted, with the arrest of Perry, charges could be reinstated and the matter would proceed to trial.
