The next wave of the northeast monsoon is expected to arrive tomorrow, with temperatures in parts of northern Taiwan expected to drop as low as 16°C, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.
The CWA said the monsoon is expected to affect Taiwan early in the week before weakening on Thursday, with overnight lows forecast to range between 17°C and 18°C in areas north of Chiayi County and in northeastern Taiwan.
Some exposed areas in northern Taiwan could get even colder, with temperatures dropping to about 16°C, the CWA said.
Taiwan is currently under the influence of a northeast monsoon, but it is not as strong as the next wave, the agency said.
Daytime highs yesterday reached 23°C to 25°C in Taipei and New Taipei City and Yilan County in the northeast, 25°C to 28°C in Taoyuan City and Hsinchu County in the north, as well as Hualien and Taitung counties in the east, and 28°C to 32°C in areas south of Miaoli County.
Large temperature swings between the daytime and nighttime were expected to persist across Taiwan, with nighttime lows forecast to fall to 21°C to 25°C last night, according to the CWA.
The northeast monsoon is also expected to bring moisture to Taiwan, with the possibility of heavy rain in the northeastern region of the nation yesterday.
The monsoon is expected to weaken today, bringing stable weather and rising temperatures across Taiwan, the CWA said.
Meanwhile, a tropical depression over waters north of Guam is likely to intensify into a tropical storm today, the CWA said.
Independent meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said that the system could strengthen into a typhoon before making a U-turn and moving east-northeast, posing no threat to Taiwan.
