ANNOUNCEMENT: People who do not comply with the ban after a spoken warning would be reported to the police, the airport company said on Friday

Taoyuan International Airport Corp on Friday announced that riding on vehicles, including scooter-suitcases (also known as “scootcases”), bicycles, scooters and skateboards, is prohibited in the airport’s terminals.

Those using such vehicles should manually pull them or place them on luggage trolleys, the company said in a Facebook post.

The ban intends to maintain order and protect travelers’ safety, as the airport often sees large crowds of people, it said, adding that it has stepped up publicity for the regulation, and those who do not comply after a spoken warning would be reported to the police.

The company yesterday said that the decision to impose the ban was made at a meeting last month on safety and management concerns about scootcases with the Civil Aviation Administration.

As the Lunar New Year holiday approaches, the airport also predicted that the peak for departures would be on Jan. 25 and 26, while for arrivals, they would be on Feb. 1 and 2.

As Japan is a popular travel destination for Taiwanese, travelers are also reminded that major Japanese airports are also cracking down on riding motorized luggage within their facilities.

Under Japanese traffic law, it is also illegal to ride scootcases on public roads, Kyodo news agency said.

Japan classifies electric suitcases “as motorized vehicles that can be ridden on roads only with the required safety equipment and a driver’s license,” it said.

According to the latest available outbound traveler statistics for Taiwan, 4.23 million Taiwanese visited Japan in 2023, compared with the 1.76 million who visited China, the second-most popular destination.
