A weather system forming in waters east of the Philippines could develop into a tropical depression or tropical storm in the next two days, but it is unclear whether it would approach Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.

Warm water temperatures and low atmospheric pressure are providing ideal conditions for the weather system to strengthen, CWA forecaster Yeh Chih-chun (葉致均) said yesterday.

Based on current forecasts, which vary widely, the developing system might cut horizontally across the Philippines’ Luzon Island in the second half of this week before crossing into the South China Sea, he said.

The storm could also move northward along the east coast of Luzon Island and veer over waters to the east of Taiwan, which would have a greater effect on Taiwan’s weather, Yeh said.

Meanwhile, the CWA’s 7-day forecast showed that temperatures in northern and northeastern Taiwan would rebound to about 28°C to 29°C today and tomorrow.

However, as northeasterly winds strengthen tomorrow night, temperatures in the north and northeast would drop to 24°C to 25°C degrees on Wednesday, and would remain cool with occasional showers through Saturday, the CWA said.

In central and southern Taiwan, the CWA forecasts partly cloudy to sunny weather with highs in the low 30s throughout next week.
