People visiting coastal areas in eastern Taiwan this week should beware of possible swells, after this year’s first tropical storm formed yesterday morning, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.

As of 2pm yesterday, the center of Tropical Storm Ewiniar was 850km south of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan’s southernmost point, and was moving northeast at 13kph, with a radius of 80km, CWA data showed.

The tropical storm is forecast to move to waters east of the Ryukyu Islands from today to Wednesday and move north afterward, it said.

The storm would not directly influence the weather in Taiwan, it added.

However, swells could occur off the north and east coasts, and at Hengchun Peninsula, Green Island (綠島) and Orchid Island (Lanyu, 蘭嶼), the CWA said.

Two fronts from southern China would bring rain across the nation this week, it said.

The first front would approach today, with high chances of afternoon showers in areas north of central Taiwan and mountainous areas, the CWA said.

Temporary showers and thundershowers are forecast to occur nationwide tomorrow due to the arrival of the front, particularly along the west coast and in the northeastern region, it said.

Heavy showers and extremely heavy showers are also expected in the west coast tomorrow, it added.

The front is forecast to move to waters off the southeastern coast by Wednesday, with showers or thunderstorms in the southeastern region, as well as central and southern Taiwan, it said.

Isolated showers are also forecast in the north, and in Yilan and Hualien counties, the CWA said.

Although the front is to move away from Taiwan on Thursday, chances of showers remain high in central and southern Taiwan, it said.

Cloudy skies, with isolated afternoon showers or thunderstorms, are forecast in the rest of the region, the CWA said.

Another front would affect the weather in Taiwan on Thursday and Friday next week, with afternoon showers and thundershowers forecast in the west and in the northeast, the CWA said.

Isolated showers are forecast in the east and southeast, it added.

Today, temperatures in the north could reach 32°C or 33°C, highs in the north would be only 25°C or 26°C on Wednesday, it said.

As for temperatures for the rest of the week, highs in the north and southeast regions could reach 28°C or above 30°C, the CWA said.
