The first cold air mass of this fall and winter could hit Taiwan tomorrow, bringing lows of below 14°C to the north and northeast of the country, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.

Despite mostly sunny weather predicted nationwide until next week, temperatures overnight tomorrow could reach a low of 13°C in the Greater Taipei area, 14°C in central Taiwan, 15°C in the east and 16°C in the south because of the cold air mass — when the lowest temperatures in Taipei would dip below 14°C, CWA data showed.

There could also be significant differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures, the CWA said, adding that temperatures could drop to as low as 10°C in some coastal areas.

The weather would likely become warmer as the cold air mass weakens from Sunday, forecasters said.

According to climate records from 1951 to 2020, the arrival of the season’s first cold air mass would fall within the usual time range of Nov. 10 to Dec. 15, forecasters said.

However, the expected time for a strong cold air mass — when the temperature drops to between 10°C and 12°C in Taipei — is from Nov. 22 to Jan. 2, CWA data showed.

The country usually experiences a cold surge — when the temperature falls below 10°C in Taipei — from Dec. 10 to Jan. 22, the CWA said.
