Taiwan on Sunday routed reigning Korean Basketball League champions Anyang KGC 92-64 to secure a second-place finish at the William Jones Cup in Taipei.

Taiwan’s Team B finished sixth in the nine-team round-robin invitational tournament at Taipei’s Heping Basketball Gymnasium with a 91-86 win in their final game against Iran B.

Taiwan ran riot against Anyang thanks in large part to the contributions of US-born William Artino.

Artino, who joined the national team after becoming naturalized in 2021, scored 30 points and 17 rebounds, both game highs, on a 75 field-goal percentage, including 21 points in the first half.

Anyang’s anemic performance stemmed from the absence of import player Maxwell Du’Vaughn, as well as limited court time for fellow American Bryan Griffin, who played less than four minutes.

The result saw Taiwan finish as runners-up to NCAA Division I team the UC Irvine Anteaters, who were crowned champions with a perfect 8-0 record.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Team B defeated Iran B 91-86 for their third and final win at the tournament as the Taiwanese-American Hinton brothers combined for 32 points.

Seventeen-year-old Robert Hinton, who racked up a team-high 18 points, thanked the fans for cheering for him and giving him a great summer vacation, saying he has received so many gifts from fans that he would have to buy an extra suitcase to take them all back home.

Adam Hinton described it as a very special experience to play with his brother on the same team, adding that he looked forward to playing for Taiwan at next year’s William Jones Cup.

The last time the two brothers played on the same team was three years ago when they both played for Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, Tsang Chen-cho, their Taiwanese mother, told the Central News Agency on Thursday last week.

On their debut for Taiwan, Adam Hinton finished the Jones Cup with 14.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, while Robert Hinton had 13.9 points, three boards and 1.8 dimes per game.

The Anteaters’ Pierre Crockrell II was also named overall Most Valuable Player after averaging eight points, 7.8 assists and one steal in the six games he played.
