JOINT OPERATION: Investigators found drugs inside a car’s transmission in a raid in Bangkok, apparently as part of a planned smuggling shipment to Taiwan

Taiwanese and Thai law enforcement personnel have cooperated to seize 14kg of cannabis and 600g of amphetamines that were apparently intended to be smuggled into Taiwan in car parts.
Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) officials yesterday said that six suspects have been detained in connection with the case.
Chen Yu-ning (陳佑寧), 34 — who had previously been convicted for drug trafficking and fled Taiwan — allegedly headed the smuggling ring while living in Thailand, the CIB said.
An investigation of illegal drugs sent by mail to an address in Taiwan led to the bureau to suspects in Thailand, the CIB said, adding that Thai authorities were contacted to assist in the case.
Investigators from both countries on Friday raided a residence in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang area, where they detained a Taiwanese man surnamed Lee (李), 28, allegedly a member of Chen’s gang.
Investigators found drugs inside a car’s transmission, apparently as part of a smuggling shipment to Taiwan, investigators said.
In a separate raid on Friday, Thai authorities in Bangkok’s Bang Na area apprehended five suspects, Chen and alleged ring members, including one surnamed Tseng (曾) and a Thai woman, reportedly Tseng’s girlfriend, the CIB said.
Chen in the past few days paid NT$1 million (US$31,307) to purchase the cannabis in Thailand and NT$230,000 for the amphetamines, with the drugs passed on to Lee to pack into the car parts headed for Taiwan, it said, adding that they could be sold in Taiwan for about NT$100 million.
