The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) yesterday condemned Beijing for claiming that Taiwan is part of its territory after talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The two leaders on Friday held a virtual meeting to discuss the “Ukraine crisis” and bilateral relations under their strategic partnership, with each government issuing a statement afterward.

In China’s statement, it said that Russia promised to support Beijing’s “one China” principle, which says that Taiwan is part of the People’ Republic of China (PRC).

Moscow’s statement did not mention Taiwan.

MOFA said that Chinese authorities had once again taken advantage of high-level talks with other countries to make “false claims” about the Republic of China’s sovereignty in the international community.

Taiwan is not part of the PRC and its government has never ruled Taiwan, the ministry said, adding that Beijing’s action, which sought to undermine the Republic of China’s sovereignty, should be condemned.

It also said that China and Russia were endangering peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and the Indo-Pacific region.

China has engaged in “information warfare” and increased the frequency and size of military drills near Taiwan, while the Russian invasion of Ukraine contravened the UN charter, MOFA said.

In the face of threats posed by authoritarianism, Taiwan would welcome more exchanges with countries that share the values of democracy and freedom, the ministry said.
