MORE MIS-C CASES: Three children aged from one to 11 developed the inflammatory syndrome, experiencing symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea and low blood pressure

The number of COVID-19 cases in Taiwan has exceeded 5 million, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said yesterday as it reported 21,925 new local infections, 236 imported cases and 36 deaths.

Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥), the CECC’s spokesman, said that the number of new local cases fell by 2.8 percent from the day before, but increased 4.1 percent from the number reported on Saturday last week.

The most cases were reported in New Taipei City, with 4,488, followed by Taichung with 2,689, Taipei (2,634), Taoyuan (2,465), Kaohsiung (1,751) and Tainan (1,336), CECC data showed.

There have been 4,959,531 local infections this year, with 22,866 of them moderate-to-severe cases, and 8,754 deaths, Chuang said.

Accumulated COVID-19 cases reported in Taiwan since the pandemic began reached 5,020,895 cases, including 4,996,031 local cases and 24,810 imported cases, the data showed.

Eighty-one new moderate cases and 36 severe cases were confirmed yesterday, with three of the severe cases aged between one and 11, all of whom have not been vaccinated against COVID-19, Chuang said.

The three developed multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) a few weeks after they tested positive for COVID-19, he said.

An 11-year-old girl had a fever, rashes, cough and low blood pressure on June 27 after testing positive for COVID-19 on May 15, he said.

A 10-year-old boy who was diagnosed with COVID-19 on May 26 had a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, chest tightness and red eyes from July 2 and developed low blood pressure, nephritis, enteritis and shock after being admitted to hospital, Chuang said.

The boy was moved to an intensive care unit, Chuang said.

The two cases recovered after treatment, he said.

A one-year-old boy who tested positive with a rapid test on July 24 was not taken to get medical treatment, so was not reported as a confirmed case, Chuang said.

The child developed a fever, coughing, runny nose, congestion, rashes and conjunctivitis from Monday and is still hospitalized, Chuang said.

Chuang said that 179 severe cases in children aged 12 or younger have been reported this year, including 108 with MIS-C, 27 with encephalitis, 21 with pneumonia and 10 with croup, while 27 have died.

As of Friday, 143,615 children aged six months to five years have received a dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, accounting for 18.3 percent of the age group’s population, he said.
