Rescuers found one body and were still searching for six other crew members after a Taiwanese fishing boat capsized off the coast of Japan at the weekend, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said yesterday.
Six Indonesian migrant fishers and one Taiwanese were aboard the Hsin Chang Fa No. 88, registered in New Taipei City’s Rueifang District (瑞芳), which was on Sunday spotted drifting upside down 150km north of Japan’s Ishigaki Island, the CGA said.
The Japan Coast Guard recovered one body yesterday morning, and rescue teams from Taiwan and Japan were searching for the other six crew, the CGA said, adding that the body has not yet been identified.
Taiwanese authorities said they have enlisted the help of another Taiwan-registered fishing vessel in the area to search for the six.
The Hsin Chang Fa No. 88 left Badouzi Fishing Harbor in Keelung at 11pm on Monday last week, the Ocean Affairs Council, said.
As of press time last night, divers on a Japanese coast guard vessel were still searching near the capsized fishing boat, the CGA said.
Japanese media reported that four Japanese patrol vessels were also searching near Ishigaki Island, where the waves were 1.5m high and the wind was blowing at almost 30kph.
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan has been asked to provide assistance and maintain contact with the agencies involved in the rescue effort, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
