Temperatures are expected to decline this week, reaching 10°C or lower over the weekend, the Central Weather Bureau said yesterday.
From yesterday, temperatures began to drop, and would continue to do so day by day due to the increasing strength of seasonal winds, the bureau said.
Temperatures in areas north of Chiayi as well as northeastern Taiwan are on Wednesday expected to fall to 14°C to 15°C, it said, adding that the cool weather is expected to continue into Friday.
This weekend, a cold front originating in the Arctic could skim over Taiwan, bureau Director-General Cheng Ming-dean (鄭明典) wrote on Facebook.
Citing a chart published by the US National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center, Cheng said that the Arctic oscillation index had reached minus-4, meaning that warm air has entered the northern polar region, pushing cold air from high latitudes to middle latitudes.
Taiwan is forecast to be on the edge of the cold front’s path, meaning that it would not be consistently affected by the cold air, Cheng said.
However, there was still a high likelihood that the cold front would skim over Taiwan, Cheng said, adding that people should be alert regarding changes in weather and dress warmly if the temperature drops.
Meteorologist Peng Chi-ming (彭啟明), CEO of WeatherRisk Explore Inc (天氣風險管理開發), made similar observations.
“The cold air in the northern hemisphere will be very active next week,” Peng wrote on Facebook, forecasting a drop in temperature on Wednesday and Thursday.
However, Peng said that the cold air system could gain more ground over the weekend.
According to WeatherRisk, temperatures in Taiwan could drop to 10°C or lower on Saturday.
