In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion in Taipei’s Neihu District (內湖), the Taipei Department of Transportation yesterday unveiled a series of measures designed to boost road capacity, as well as a collaborative plan with Costco’s Neihu branch to better regulate cars linig up on Jiuzong Road.

Taipei Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner Chang Jer-yang (張哲揚) said that to tackle illegal parking on Ruiguang Road, which often becomes a major problem on weekday afternoons, the department has added yellow lines to a section of road between the Ruiguang-Ganqian and the Ruiguang-Jihu intersections.

The move bars people from parking on the yellow lines during peak hours starting on Tuesday next week, Chang said.

The department also plans to cover a marker separating the fast lane and slow lane on Minquan E Road to free up road space on Tuesday next week.

It plans to downsize an island on Sec 2 of Jiuzong Road to accommodate an additional lane, which is to be used by cars making left turns to access the Sun Yat-sen Freeway by March 20.

Starting on March 20, Rueihu Street, an important passage for afternoon southbound traffic accessing the freeway, is to be changed from a two-way street to a one-way street only to be used by motorists traveling southbound to alleviate traffic flow, Chang said.

A road entrance leading to an access ramp connected to the Huangdong Overpass is too close to the Nanjing-Jiuzong intersection, which often causes snarled traffic, Chang said.

The entrance is to be closed and a new one 215m to the east is to be created instead, he said.

A island on Tiding Boulevard is to be demolished to break up interweaving that often occurs near lanes 316 and 358 of Ruiguang Road during the morning rush hour, he said.

Due to people driving to Costco waiting in line for parking spaces, the street furniture outside Costco’s parking lot is to be removed.

Taipei Department of Transportation division chief Chang Sheng-wan (張生萬) said that the department had asked the store to set up an electronic sign to inform customers of the number of available parking spaces.

“Two police officers and three voluntary traffic guides are to be deployed near the stores’s parking lot to ask people blocking Jiuzong Road to drive away,” Chang Sheng-wan said.
