《TAIPEI TIMES 焦點》Guilty verdict for suppliers in Ting Hsin oil scandal

The Kaohsiung District Court on Friday found former Cheng I Food Co (正義公司) president Ho Yu-jen (何育仁) guilty of negligence and sentenced him to eight months in prison, while the deputy manager of the company’s purchasing department, Hu Chin-min (胡金忞), was handed a four-month prison term.

Cheng I Food Co is a subsidiary of Ting Hsin International Group (頂新集團) that produces fat and cooking oil products.

Yu Fa Olein Co (裕發油脂) chairwoman Ho Wu Hui-chu (何吳惠珠) was given a five-year term for selling oils used in animal feeds and not certified for human consumption and fined NT$6 million (US$179,147).

The court also found supplier Lin Ming-chung (林明忠) guilty of selling lard and other fat products from unknown origins and unfit for human consumption between 2009 and 2014, and sentenced him to a 50-month prison term and a fine of NT$4.47 million.

The court ruled that Ho Wu and Lin mixed lard and other fat products and other low-grade materials which did not meet safety standards, and sold the results to Cheng I Food Co to process into fat and cooking oil products, for which they made a profit of about NT$13 million.

Ho Wu and Lin falsified information about the origin of their supplied materials, the court said.

Cheng I Food Co officials Ho Yu-jen and Hu Chin-min were found negligent for not requesting that suppliers provide documents about the origin of materials, failing to obtain food quality and safety certificates, and found both men violated articles in the Act Governing Food Safety and Sanitation (食品安全衛生管理法).
