The police are targeting five possible suspects in the killing of a police detective in Taipei early yesterday after an initial review of surveillance footage and interviews with witnesses, according to Taipei police.
The five individuals — four men and one woman — are suspected of having instigated a mob of people into beating the detective to death, the police said.
Two of the five suspects had already been questioned as of yesterday evening, the police said, indicating that the case was being investigated by both the Taipei City Police Department and the Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office.
Police detective Hsueh Chen-kuo (薛貞國) died yesterday after being beaten up by a violent mob outside the ATT 4 FUN department store in the city’s Xinyi District (信義).
According to the initial police report, the 38-year-old detective was apparently handling a disturbance at a night club in the department store when he was assaulted by a group of 50 suspects with sticks and knives for at least three minutes.
He sustained multiple contusions to his head and was declared dead after being rushed to a hospital, police said.
Police said a scuffle erupted in the night club on Saturday and they are still trying to determine why Hsueh was at the scene in the first place, as he was off duty that day.
Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) said he hopes that the case is solved within two weeks.
