AUGUST TARGET: The city’s MRT system is also expanding the number of station announcements in Japanese to 21, as Japan tops tourist numbers

Staff writer, with CNA

With more South Korean tourists visiting Taiwan, the Taipei MRT system is to introduce Korean-language station announcements at its 15 most-popular stops, Taipei Rapid Transit Corp (TRTC) said on Tuesday.

From 2018 to March this year, South Korea was the second-largest source of travelers to Taiwan, after Japan, TRTC said, citing statistics compiled by the Tourism Bureau.

About 2.14 million South Koreans visited the nation during that period, prompting TRTC to record Korean station announcements for use at 15 high-volume stops.

TOP 15

The Korean announcements are to be introduced at Taipei Main Station, Zhongshan, Dongmen, Taipei 101/World Trade Center, Tamsui, Ximen, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, Minquan West Road, Songjiang Nanjing, Zhongxiao Xinsheng, Guting, Nanjing Fuxing, Zhongxiao Fuxing, Daan and Nangang Exhibition Center.

TRTC also announced that it is expanding the number of stops with Japanese-language announcements from 13 to 21.

From 2018 to March, about 3.4 million Japanese visited Taiwan, bureau statistics showed.

The eight additional stops are Minquan West Road, Songjiang Nanjing, Zhongxiao Xinsheng, Guting, Nanjing Fuxing, Zhongxiao Fuxing, Daan and Nangang Exhibition Center.

All Korean-language additions and Japanese-language updates are to be gradually rolled out and would most likely be completed at the end of August.

After August, TRTC said that station announcements would be made in Mandarin and then foreign languages — with English in all stations and Japanese and Korean at designated stops — followed by Hoklo (commonly known as Taiwanese) and Hakka.

VISUAL DISPLAYS

Visual stop displays will be presented in Chinese and English, TRTC said, adding that the company would continue collecting tourist statistics to continue improving services for international visitors.
