The main suspects in two shootings that took place within a month of last year’s local elections have been arrested in China, the Tainan City Police Department said yesterday.
Local police and prosecutors were cautious about publicizing the apprehension of alleged shooter Kung Hsiang-chih (孔祥志) and his alleged accomplice Hung Cheng-chun (洪政軍), saying that unnecessary attention could prompt Chinese authorities to purposefully delay the return of the suspects.
However, the police department yesterday confirmed their apprehension in China, without providing further details.
Hung and Kung were handed to Taiwanese law enforcement officers in China at about noon yesterday, and arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport in the afternoon, a source familiar with the matter said.
Early on Nov. 10 last year, Kung allegedly fired several shots at the building of a technology firm run by former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Central Executive Committee member Kuo Tsai-chin (郭再欽) in Tainan’s Syuejia District (學甲), before firing shots at the nearby campaign headquarters of then-DPP Tainan City Councilor candidate Hsieh Shu-fan (謝舒凡).
Hsieh won the seat in the election on Nov. 26.
Kung allegedly fired 58 shots at the technology company and 30 at Hsieh’s campaign headquarters, police said.
No one was injured in the incidents.
Other suspects have been detained, including another alleged accomplice surnamed Yang (楊) and five men who allegedly helped Hung and Kung flee.
