《TAIPEI TIMES 焦點》 Students vow to lay siege to ministry over changes

2015/07/22 03:00

By Lee Hsin-fang / Staff reporter

Students from nearly 300 senior and vocational high schools vowed to block the entrance to the Ministry of Education today to protest what they called “curriculum guidelines hammered out behind closed doors.”

Restoration of Taiwan Social Justice founder Lin Yu-lun (林于倫) yesterday said the ministry never wanted to directly engage students opposing the controversial curriculum guideline changes, adding that it still plans to use the new guidelines. He warned that protests against the ministry would only become more aggressive, and that Minister of Education Wu Se-hwa (吳思華) should speak to the students for making such a bad decision.

“The ministry should not block students with barricades or barbed wire. It could at least hold a public hearing, in which the minister could talk with the students personally,” Lin said.

Twelve Year Compulsory Education Parental Alliance Convener Chow Mei-li (周美里) said Wu should step down due to the controversies generated by the changes to high-school curriculum guidelines and 12-year compulsory education.

Black Island National Front Youth Front spokesperson Lai Ping-yu (賴品妤) said her organization has its doubts over what the ministry last year claimed to be a minor change to the high-school curriculum guidelines. She said that Black Island National Front Youth Front members would show up today to support high-school students as fellow concerned citizens.

Taiwan Association of University Professors chairman Peter Chang (張信堂) said the ministry should not insist on implementing controversial curriculum guidelines next month, as the Taipei High Administrative Court in February ruled against the ministry’s curriculum adjustment process.
