A severe geomagnetic storm might cause power outages, and disturb satellite and radio operations, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said yesterday.
The geomagnetic storm was expected to begin influencing Taiwan from 11pm last night and last about 54 hours, the agency added.
AR3848, an Earth-facing sunspot region, on Wednesday produced a long-duration X1.8 solar flare that was associated with an Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) and was expected to reach Earth between late last night and today, information posted on the agency’s Web site said.
The solar event could accelerate the solar wind and boost the interplanetary magnetic field, potentially disturbing the Earth’s electromagnetic field, the CWA said.
The geomagnetic storm could reach 4 on the G-scale — the scale’s second-highest reading, classified as “severe” — creating large disturbances, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said.
The CME could disrupt communications, power grids, navigation, radio and satellite operations, the CWA said.
The northern lights — aurora borealis — might be visible in some areas of Taiwan, the CWA added.
