Four Chinese fishing vessels were expelled from restricted waters on Monday, the Coast Guard Administration (CGA) said in a statement yesterday.
The coast guard said that it had been made aware of the presence of Chinese vessels at 3:13am on Monday.
Reports said that boats were spotted 27 nautical miles (50km) from the Port of Taichung — but still within Taiwan’s territorial sea baseline of 24 nautical miles — by Taiwanese fishers.
By 6am on Monday, coast guard patrols discovered two Chinese fishing boats within the territorial waters 40 nautical miles from Hsinchu City’s Siangshan District (香山).
The boats, which were not fishing, were expelled to waters outside of Taiwan’s territorial sea baseline, the CGA said.
Two more Chinese boats were discovered at about 1pm the same day about 30 nautical miles from Taichung’s Songbo Fishing Harbor (松柏漁港), or about 17 nautical miles from Taiwan’s territorial sea baseline, it said.
The boats, which were also not fishing, were expelled to waters beyond the baseline, the CGA said.
As Chinese fishing vessels have been periodically discovered in the waters near Taichung, the coast guard said it would increase random patrols to ensure the safety of Taiwan’s waters.
